What is Ayurveda?

If you have ever been to India, you will know that feeling of intense heat, the scent of exotic spices and incense, the noise and mayhem all around you, street sellers shouting, horns blaring out, the sound of holy cows mooing and temple bells ringing. To me there is no place quite like India, its intensity and richness of Spirituality permeates my very core, and has awakened my soul. This is the home of one of the oldest medical systems in the world, Ayurveda.

It simply means science of life and has been practiced for more than 5000 years. Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga, existing in India alongside conventional medicine, its based on achieving a state of balance and harmony within the body, mind and spirit.

Pinda Sveda

This is a traditional treatment which uses heated boluses/pindas the size of a large orange and made from nourishing grains, herbs and oils.  The pindas are used to firmly massage the entire body and promote sweating.

Used for relief of chronic and acute muscle and joint pain, rehabilitates and rejuvenates fatigued muscles and joints.  It also reduces fat, treats cellulite and improves skin tone and texture.

This treatment is also an excellent relief for many illnesses and is considered especially superb for wasting diseases such as paraplegia and poliomyelitis, which result in the wasting away of muscular tissue.

Prior to the Pinda Sveda the whole body is massaged with the appropriate medicated oil.

Pinda Sveda is excellent for vata and kapha disorders since both doshas are innately cold in nature and the excessive heat stimulates the fat tissues and releases sweat through the skin, generating a total euphoria of warmth throughout the whole system.

Shirodhara

In Ayurveda the head is considered to be the most important part of the body to be treated.  The head contains four of the five sensory organs of the body and seven of the nine bodily apertures through which we interact with the external universe.  On the crown of the head is the sacred shrine called Sahasrara chakra, through which the soul is said to enter the body at birth and leave after death.

Shirodhara is known as the ‘king’ of treatments.  It is the process by which warm oil or medicated liquid is methodically drizzled onto the forehead from a specially designed pot hung directly above the client.  This is an ancient technique and the flow is maintained at a certain rhythmic speed to awaken the third eye.  Vast and miraculous healing occurs when this technique is performed to perfection.

Through the rhythm of the oil trickling onto the third eye, which is the seat of our cognitive memories, awakening of these memories occurs, bodily tissues are transformed and good health is restored.

Prior to Shirodhara therapy the preliminary procedure of abhyanga massage is performed.

A truly soporific treat, Shirodhara soothes and invigorates the senses as well as the mind, inducing a total state of relaxation and wellness.

Shirodhara helps in clearing mental fog and nagging thoughts including addictions and calms the nervous system.  This is a fantastic treatment for stress relief.

Used to treat depression, insomnia, headaches, neurological disorders, mental disorders, exhaustion, sinusitis, anxiety, allergic rhinitis, weakness of muscles and joints, facial paralysis, hearing impairment, menieres disease, tinnitus, vision problems, premature greying hair, dandruff, scalp sores and inflammation of the head.

Shirodhara (1hr) £70

“Shirodhara has really helped me through a stressful period of cancer treatment (surgery and radiotherapy), I now have regular treatments to maintain a sense of well-being. It is the most relaxing treatment I have ever had, as I float away into a calm mental space as the warm oil trickles onto my forehead.”
